Section II (Real-World Experience)
- From June to August 2017, I served as the social media intern for the Durham Sports Commission, a 501(c)(3) under the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau (DCVB). During this time, I was responsible for:
- creating the first round of Facebook advertisements for the department — 1, 2, 3
- analyzing other sports commissions in the region and/or of comparable size to develop future media strategies and outreach goals — spreadsheet (.xlsx)
- researching potential events or sports to determine their worth in bringing to Durham’s sports scene — eSports brief (.pdf)
- I have worked in some capacity for the Campus Echo, NCCU’s student newspaper, since Jan. 2017. I first served as a staff reporter/photographer for the spring 2017 semester before ascending to my current role of co-editor-in-chief alongside Daniel Hargrove this past fall. Some of my more recent articles include:
- “New student center plans unveiled” (Feb. 27, 2018) — discusses the plans for the new student center set to begin construction on campus in 2019
- “Looking back 90 years later” (Nov. 17, 2017) — a retrospective article analyzing the contents of the second-ever issue of the Echo from Dec. 25, 1927 for the paper’s 90th anniversary
- “‘Students Defend DACA’ panel shines a light on local Dreamers” (Oct. 3,
2017) — covering a panel discussion with attorneys, activists and NCCU students affected by DACA in NCCU’s School of Law
Section III (Critical/Theoretical Analysis)
- MSCM 2590: Group Case Study Assignment on McKinney (Google Docs link) — last spring (2017), I, along with five other students, developed a written case study and accompanying presentation on McKinney, a world-class ad agency located in downtown Durham. Aspects of the case study included an interview with McKinney executives, a rationale as to why we chose to profile the agency in the first place and a multi-faceted organizational background analysis derived from information provided from the interview and outside (sometimes academic) sources.
- MSCM 4605: Group Case Study on NFL Protests (Emaze link) — last fall (2017), I participated in another group case study project, this time in creating a plausible legal position for Colin Kaepernick following the grievance he filed against the National Football League last October. The linked presentation, which was a meta-analysis involving both critical legal studies (CLS) and race theory (CRT), was presented to an audience at the 2017 State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research & Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS) at Campbell University on Nov. 4.
Section IV (Media Production)
MSCM 3595:
- Corporate Trifold Brochure (.pdf) — as part of one of three portfolios (corporate, university, nonprofit) required in class, I created a trifold brochure for the corporation of my choosing: World Wrestling Entertainment, better known as WWE. The brochure was originally designed in Canva before being finalized in Adobe InDesign. All pictures/information are official WWE media/statistics.
- (Boston) University Portfolio (Google Drive folder link) — the entirety of the second in-class portfolio for Boston University, which includes a mock event plan/promotional materials and press kit for the university itself, is in this folder. The hex color code (#XXXXXX), font and logos are taken directly from the university’s branding guide.
- Nonprofit Portfolio (Google Drive folder link) — the third in-class portfolio, save for a website that is still currently in development and unpublished to the web, was developed to help Assembly #3365 (Msgr. William F. O’Brien) of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men’s fraternal organization of which my father is a part of. In an effort to modernize their image and attract younger potential Knights, I developed a color palette based on the hex codes from the organization’s crest and created both promotional and council-specific materials alongside the required presentation and press kit (release/poster).
Section V (Multimedia)
- Documentary: “Nothing But Love in God’s Water” (2017; Vimeo link) — I served as a production assistant in sound mixing and archival research on the second major documentary created by Dr. Bruce dePyssler’s group Bull City Doc Squad. The film was a part of the ‘Real People – Reel Durham’ section of the 2018 Hayti Heritage Film Festival and screened on Friday, Feb. 16.
- Online reporting: College Town NC (News & Observer) — outside of my editorship/reporting for the Campus Echo, I also create content for College Town NC, a website overseen by the News & Observer and written by students that covers four of the Triangle’s universities — N.C. State, UNC, N.C. Central and Duke. My posts, which have been published on the website since Nov. 2016, have amassed over 50,000 views.
- Photojournalism: the posts on the main page of this website, most recently covering the 2018 Aggie-Eagle Classic on March 1, have some of my photojournalism material in randomized collages.
